Tried the new Visual C++ Express

I tried the new Visual C++ Express (or Visual Studio 2005 / Whidbey). Interesting product, but I can’t use it. It isn’t advertised, but you can develop an x86/PE Win32 app. I will also say that it was fast and the IDE had a good feel. Unfortunately, they don’t integrate the Resource Editor or the ATL. You have to get the full version to build anything interesting. Yet, if you do the app in C#, you can build a full app.

This is short sited.

There are so many developers still using Visual Studio 6.0, and this won’t improve things. VS 6.0 was started in 1995/1996 and shipped in 1998. In a few years, that system will be 10 years old. Yet, these developers here in the US and outside aren’t going to drop $700 - $2000 on MSDN and the new Visual Studio. So they tolerate the old STL and C++. Even at places that can afford it, they don’t switch because they know the toolchain or they want to link to the C runtime that is everywhere.

Microsoft needs a cheap developer system, and they are making strides towards that. Lets see what happens.

One More Cartoon…

I think this piece says it best…

The Matrix - Republican Style

take the pill

(Ed. note. - I’m sure there is a Democratic Matrix as well.)

Fahrenheit 9/11

Ok, lots of controversy and different views on this movie.

I urge you to please go see it.

It didn’t transform me or yada yada yada. However, it did compile into one movie very interesting facts and video. The pictures speak thousands of words.

One other note, I talked to my mom about the movie on the phone. She read that the movie was just opinions, and no facts. I have no doubt that there is going to be a lot of confusion around this. There are strong forces colliding here and it beneifts the Republicans to create as much confusion as possible. I wonder if they can see beyond this and realize that they can still be Republicans, but not support Bush. You cannot deny what is really happening in Iraq.

It’s already happening…

Science is finding new ways to change us. Evolution is subtly at work.

I especially like this description of the great grandfather, “Her grandfather, a construction worker, had unloaded curbstones by hand, hefting stones weighing at least 330 pounds.”

Wow

Weird day…

So, at 5:00 AM I woke up to a mosquito attacking me. I closed off the room and spent about 5 minutes in hunter-killer mode. I successfully smacked that pain in my ass. Fortunately, I fell back to sleep and got some sleep.

When I woke up, it was to the music of a leaf blower by the lawn guys. Joy. One other treat they provide is absolutely no water pressure. So shaving and showering are out. Luckily, I took care of the showering part the night before.

I then water the garden. This turns out to go fine and I get a nice ripe strawberry that we grew.

Then I think things are going fine, but I then see a train going backwards. I’ve seen this many times, but today it seemed weird.

I get to work, and what do I hear: leaf blowers.

This blog is turning into a Harvey Pekar comic.

Google IPO Tidbits

Merrill gets dropped in this press release. Other tidbits: you must buy at least 5 shares and there is a belief that these shares are $88 a piece.

Great quote…

Kernighan said that “Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.”

So True!
