Saw the old Star Wars on the widescreen last night with the boy.
Wow, still a great old movie. He loved it and I enjoyed it from the adult perspective. I saw it a while back, but I really wasn’t paying that much attention to the detail. Lucas really got that one right.
…
At work, this brought up the topic of whether Star Wars was truly a Sci-Fi movie or not. Although it has some very classic themes and story arcs, I think it is definitely Sci-Fi. If you have space-ships and lasers… it’s Sci-Fi alright! IMHO, The best Sci-Fi incorporates good drama, story and characters. Look at Star Trek. It was heavily based on old nautical/navy style stories with some modern themes and technology thrown in.
…
Anyways, I’m rambling… but, it’s good to experience that old Star Wars story. I have to admit, it was the Episode III that got me wanting to watch the whole thing again.

I was playing with some old Apple ][ disk images today.
I have a mental image in my mind of what it used to take in order to download an image over a modem, compressed!, back in the old days. I remember that one disk was split into 6 or 8 parts and it took half a day to get one.
I downloaded 2 disk images today in a few seconds.
What is interesting about these disk images is that I remember spending weeks playing the games on them. It’s interesting to think about the power of just 64k of memory and about 280k of storage… something so small, yet so time consuming.
(one other side note. It is also nice to see that the emulators these days can follow the rules and not consume so much CPU like they did in the past. The applewin emulator barely moves the needle on my CPU graphs)
(Also, here is a good place to get a Windows Apple // emulator)

I got the display and I must say that I’m really enjoying it. There is such a sense of freedom with a large display. The future is good. Lets see if I can use this display for good instead of evil.
Also, I have no doubt in my mind that I will acquire a 30″ display once those get popular as well.

The internet has just about everything for everybody.
I occasionally like to listen to the beep-boops of old computer music.
There is an online Radio called SLAY Radio that plays old C64 SID chip music as an MP3 stream. It’s awesome and I highly recommend it.
For example, I was listening to it and they were mixing in clips from an old Max Headroom show. (In particular, the clips of the guys trying to sell someone famous to the Body Bank for credits).
Awesome

Nice marketplace show on that tough 1 hour of transitioning from work to home for Dad’s or working moms.

We get Wired magazine at work and I read this article called La Vida Robot. It’s a story about these 2nd generation Mexican immigrant teenagers who scrape together an underwater robot that wins in a competition against even the MIT team.
It’s a great story. Well, in a recent issue, there is a blurb noting that they all got a scholarship together and they may get into MIT themselves.
