Adobe Open Sources their Libraries (UI too)

Adobe has released their internal C++ libraries as open source here.

Interesting stuff in there. It’s always good to see different ideas in computer science.

The key parts are called Adam and Eve. Essentially they are a constraints system for data dependency modeling and behaviour and a declarative constraints based system for describing UI. Neat stuff. I’ll have to read more about it later.

The Also Rans - an mp3

Hey,

Every now and then I go searching for music. While I didn’t find what I wanted (an old Archers of Loaf song), I did discover this band. Check out this mp3:

Conversation Piece

The guy who runs the site is in the band.

Bradley’s almanac - live indie recordings

I love the internet.

Expect a boatload of posts…

I’m clearing out my queue. Expect a bunch of posts after lunch.

Steve Job’s Keynote

So last night I was looking at a Quicktime short. I was having some problems so I started Quicktime by itself (rather than as a browser plug-in). The app had an ad for the Steve Job’s Keynote at the recent WWDC. Because I’ve been drinking from the Kool-Aid lately, I decided to take a look.

I fast forwarded through certain parts of the keynote. Mr. Jobs is a great speaker. Also, I heard rumors that he was booed when they announced the switch. I didn’t hear any boos… more like gasps. IMHO, he nailed the session and showed the world how Apple keeps moving forward. They had all the bases covered for this transition.

No Open Firmware and 64 bit

Now that the word on Open Firmware going away is out, it makes me wonder about this decision.

Frankly, I like Open Firmware a lot. Why wouldn’t they port it?

Maybe this has to do with DRM. In the future, DRM will be part of the BIOS, and maybe Apple doesn’t want to replicate or can’t keep OpenFirmware if they move in that direction.

Then there is the 64 bit question. Hopefully OS X will be released for 32 bit procs as well. The transition to 64 bits will still take a while and there are plenty of great 32 bit boxes out there for OS X.

Mac OS X is a not a server OS

Mac OS X doesn’t do well against Linux according to this article. The MySQL performance is pretty bad.

I kind of felt this might be the case, but I am surprised that the kernel developers still haven’t addressed this. Hopefully this news might create some pressure in the blogosphere on Apple.

Jeri Ellsworth’s talk at Stanford

Steve told me about this, but we couldn’t go see it due to work. They do have a video of it up, and it is worth watching.

Video of Talk

Since Jeri is a she, that makes what she has done very rare. It’s great to see a high-school drop-out, self taught electrical engineer accomplish what she has done. Very few of the CS grads that I know could come close to pulling off what she has accomplished. In fact, very few people ever really accomplish anything memorable. I hope the ACM or some organization gives her some credit.
