Well, I’m getting old. People I work with don’t even know what the DEMO scene is. Such is life.

Anyways, if you have IE try out this demo that was slated for ASSEMBLY 2005

Firefox Tabbing in OS X

Due to long standing bug, #310886, Firefox won’t respect the full keyboard access settings.

Luckily, as usual, someone on the internets has solved this problem and I found a solution in about 2 minutes.

Thank you Ethan, Keving, and Google!

Harry Potter : Goblet of Fire

Overall: Highly Recomended

I hate going to theatres these days. The seats are not comfortable, the bathrooms aren’t very nice. Did I mention the uncomfortable seats and the lady in front who brings a 2 year old to a movie that is quite scary? Movie theatres are not great places.

However, my daughter is a Harry Potter fan and she has been counting the days to see this film. I really like Harry Potter books and movies as well. It is still appealing to see these books come to life in the movies. So, we Fandango’d a few tickets for the matinee over in Redwood City.

Fandango rocks. Very easy.

The movie. Great special effects on a great story. Good pacing and a good rendition of the book. (As in, they cut the right stuff to make the movie work)

If you can wait, that is even better. Wait for the DVD and avoid the theatre mess.

I like standards - GSM

GSM

Ok, my wife’s phone got destroyed. Don’t ask, but it wasn’t her fault.

Here is the good news. I made a conscious choice to be on a GSM based phone. As a result, it was easy to get her up and running on another phone. I simply pulled the SIM card and plugged it into a used Nokia phone I purchased from some guy. While I bought it from him, I tested calling her number.

It just worked.

I like it when stuff like this happens. I like it when there are standards. Her old phone was Sony Ericsson on ATT. Her new used phone was Nokia after the Cingular merger. Everything worked.

My phone and her phone will probably work anywhere in the world.

Firefoxy

When I started using OS X, one of the first apps I downloaded was Firefox. I really like some of their extensions, so it’s a done deal. Over the past few days, I’ve also been using Safari. Overall, it is not bad… in fact it is quite good. It definitely has a few problems (for example, closing all your tabs when you close a window. Check out Taboo if you want to solve that.)

So, I’ll be using both Firefox and Safari on the Mac. One thing really bugged me though. Firefox’s HTML buttons and controls looked bad in a page. What to do?

Wait, of course. If you aren’t an early adopter, someone out on the internets will solve your problem for you.

In this case, I found this app called Firefoxy that adds a few files to your Firefox install that gives it a much much cleaner UI. This will work on other platforms, but the App is only for OS X. I just downloaded and then dragged Firefox onto Firefoxy and it does the magic. If I want to turn it off, I just do the same thing.

I’ve been using it since Friday night, and I must say that it is worth it. Great job Firefoxy and team!

OS X Virtual Desktops

Here are some links to some Virtual Desktops. I haven’t tried any of them, but I do find them interesting. The one called ‘Desktop Manager’ looks the most promising.
